Check the mover, not the ad

Every line on this plate is federal, public and free to check. Run it on us. Then run it on whoever quotes against us.

Registration and authority

Any company moving household goods across state lines has to be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and carry a USDOT number. Registration, operating authority and insurance are all public records, so you never have to take a mover's word for any of it.

Look up a mover's USDOT registration, authority and insurance on the FMCSA SAFER company snapshot

Paperwork you are owed

Before an interstate move, the mover has to give you a written estimate and the booklet “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”. If either one is missing, that is not a paperwork delay. That is the answer.

Read the FMCSA consumer guide to interstate moves, Protect Your Move

Two levels of liability

Released Value Protection is included at no extra charge and pays 60 cents per pound per article, which is very little for anything valuable. Full Value Protection costs extra and covers repair, replacement or a cash settlement. Full Value is the default unless you waive it in writing.

Three kinds of estimate

A binding estimate fixes the price for the inventory listed on it. A non binding estimate can change once the shipment is weighed. A binding not to exceed estimate means you pay the lower of the estimate and the actual cost. Ask which one you are holding.

Walk away if you see

  • A price quoted with no inventory and no survey behind it
  • A demand for a large cash deposit up front
  • A company that will not put the estimate in writing

Our side of it: the estimate reaches you in writing before a lane is booked, we tell you which of the three kinds it is, the booklet goes out with it, and you choose your liability level on paper rather than on a clipboard at the door. We do not ask for a large cash deposit to hold a truck.

Why we place it here

This placement is our opinion, not a customer’s. 8 Top Movers ranks Apex Van Lines at number 7 because the operation is narrow on purpose: scheduled corridors out of one region, rather than a desk that will take any move anywhere. A narrow promise is an easier one to keep.

That focus is also the limit, and it is the honest reason this sits at number 7 rather than at the top of the list. On the corridors above, a pickup window is a schedule. Off them, a leg has to be built for your load, and the same date becomes a plan instead of a slot. Read this page as a good fit for a Midwest departure that can meet a truck already running, and a poor one for a pickup far off the map with no room to move on dates.

There is no score, no grade and no tally behind that judgement, on this page or on the hub, because we do not have a measured one to publish. What you get instead is the reasoning above and the federal checks on the plate before it, which you can run on us yourself.

8 Top Movers is an advertising-supported comparison service. Rankings reflect our editorial judgment applied to pricing transparency, claims handling, delivery reliability, and customer experience. They are our opinion, not a measured rating, and we do not publish per-company scores or review counts. Moving companies pay us to compete for your business — for a listing, and when we put your job through our network of eight. You never pay us, and using this desk does not increase the quote. That pay does not buy a higher number. Requesting a quote is a moving-concierge service: we share only moving criteria (route, size, date) with those companies. They send pricing to us. They never receive your name, phone, or email. You choose which mover to go with, based on the estimates. It is never a booking and carries no obligation.

Asked before booking

What does a dedicated lane change about my pickup window?

A lane is a corridor a truck already runs on a schedule, so equipment is routed through your origin whether or not your load is on it. That is what lets a pickup window be a couple of days instead of a couple of weeks: you are being fitted to a truck that is already moving, rather than waiting for one to fill. The honest limit is that the tight windows belong to the corridors listed on this page. Away from them the window is set by when a truck can be routed your way, and either way you should have the window in writing.

My pickup is not on a corridor you run. Can you still take it?

Often yes, and the answer turns on three things: how far the pickup sits off the corridor, how flexible your dates are, and how large the load is. A small load an hour off a lane is straightforward to add. A large load several hours off it may need a leg of its own, which changes both the window and the price. Ask which of those two your move is before you book, because that is the difference between a scheduled window and a best effort one.

Is it really one driver from origin to destination?

On a direct haul the shipment stays on one trailer from load to unload, so there is no warehouse transfer and no second crew handling your boxes. Whether that is available for your move depends on the size of the load and the lane it rides. If a transfer is needed you should be told before you book and it should be written on the estimate, not explained on delivery day. Ask for that in writing from any mover, including this one.

Why will you not price the move from a room count?

Because the price is driven by weight and by the space the load takes on the trailer, and a room count tells you neither. A binding estimate only fixes the price for the inventory listed on it, so an estimate built without an inventory or a survey has nothing holding it in place. A price quoted with no inventory behind it, whether it arrives over the phone or through a form like this one, is one of the warning signs the FMCSA tells consumers to watch for, and it is not how a lane gets priced here.

The pickup window is a couple of days. What happens across them?

The window is the range the driver arrives in, not an appointment. Federal hours of service rules cap how long a driver can be behind the wheel in a day, and weather and road closures move the rest, so any honest mover gives you a range rather than an hour. What you should get inside that range is contact: a call the day before and another on approach, so a two day window does not cost you two days of waiting by the door.
