The economics

Licensed where it counts

Three households, one trailer, one run of diesel. That is the entire idea behind the price.

Federal operating authority for household goods is public. This page publishes the USDOT and MC so you can verify before you book.

Nothing about the truck changes. Same driver, same trailer, same miles. What changes is how many households are paying for the run, and a window with a little give in it is what makes filling one possible.

The lane

What happens to your load on the way

Three stops, written down before you book. Nothing on this lane happens off the estimate.

  1. Stop 1

Your load is measured and tagged at pickup

  2. Stop 2

It rides with households moving the same lane

  3. Last stop

Delivery lands inside the window on your estimate

The trade

What a flexible window actually costs you

A window you can flex

What you give up
The exact day. Pickup and delivery both land somewhere inside a spread, and that spread is written on the estimate before you sign it.
What you get back
Space you were never going to use. Your household shares the trailer, so the cost of the run is spread across everyone riding it.
or

A date you can hold

What you give up
The saving. A named day means the trailer leaves whether it is full or not, and that empty space lands on one household rather than three.
What you get back
Certainty. Worth paying for when a lease ends on a Friday, or when a closing date is simply not going to move for you.

Both are real options here. If the date matters more than the money, say so on the form and we will price it that way instead.

The read

Where 8 Top Movers places this one

Rank 3 of 8. Editorial judgment, not a measured rating.

How we rank

We place Hudson Van Lines third because the saving it is built on is real, and so is the condition attached to it. Consolidated shipping is the oldest way there is to make a long haul cheaper, and this is a company that leads with the trade rather than burying it inside a total.

It is the same condition that keeps it from ranking higher. A reader who cannot move their dates collects none of that saving, and the ranking has to hold that reader in view too. Take this as our pick for mid-atlantic origin long-hauls, not as a general recommendation.

The checks

How to check any interstate mover, including this one

None of this is inside knowledge. Four checks, all of them public or written into the paperwork you are owed, and every quote you are weighing should survive all four.

1

Look up the USDOT number

Any company moving household goods across state lines has to be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and carry a USDOT number. You do not have to take that on trust from anybody: registration, operating authority and insurance are public on the FMCSA SAFER company snapshot (opens in a new tab).

2

Get the paperwork before the truck

Interstate movers are required to give you the booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move and a written estimate before the move. If either one shows up after you have already committed, the order is wrong.

3

Name the estimate type

A binding estimate fixes the price for the inventory listed. A non-binding estimate can change once the shipment is weighed. A binding not-to-exceed estimate means you pay the lower of the estimate and the actual cost. Ask which of the three you are signing.

4

Choose the liability level on purpose

Released Value Protection is included at no extra charge and pays 60 cents per pound per article, which is very little for anything valuable. Full Value Protection costs extra and covers repair, replacement or a cash settlement. Full Value is the default unless you waive it in writing.

Walk away when you see

  • A quote given over the phone with no inventory and no survey.
  • A demand for a large cash deposit up front.
  • A company that will not put the estimate in writing.

The FMCSA keeps a consumer site for interstate moves at the FMCSA guide Protect Your Move (opens in a new tab). Read it before you book anyone. On our side of it: the booklet and a written estimate reach you before pickup, the estimate type is named on that estimate, and the delivery window is written down instead of implied.

Questions

Questions people ask before they share a trailer

What does sharing a trailer actually change about my move?

The truck does not change. Same driver, same trailer, same miles. What changes is that several households are paying for one run, so the cost of that run is split rather than carried alone. Your shipment is inventoried and tagged before it is loaded and kept together as one block. The trade you are making is date control: a shared load moves when the lane is worth running, which is why the dates reach you as a window rather than a single day.

How wide is a delivery window on a consolidated run?

It is a spread of days rather than one date. How wide depends on the lane, the distance, the season and how much freight is already moving in that direction, so it is not a number we can honestly quote before we have your route. Ask for the spread on your lane and it goes on the written estimate before you book, which means you are agreeing to a stated range rather than to a hope.

What can move the price after I have booked?

That depends on which estimate you signed, which is why the type belongs on the paperwork. A binding estimate fixes the price for the inventory listed, so what moves it is adding items. A non-binding estimate can change once the shipment is weighed. A binding not-to-exceed estimate means you pay the lower of the estimate and the actual cost. Past the estimate type, the usual additions are a long carry from the door to the truck, a shuttle for a street a trailer cannot enter, and stairs that were not on the survey.

What actually protects my belongings on a shared trailer?

The liability level you choose, not the trailer. Released Value Protection is included at no extra charge and pays 60 cents per pound per article, which is very little for anything valuable. Full Value Protection costs extra and covers repair, replacement or a cash settlement, and it is the default unless you waive it in writing. Separately, a shared load passes more handling points than a dedicated truck, which is exactly why every item is tagged against an inventory and checked back off it at delivery.

Can I hold an exact pickup day and still share a trailer?

Sometimes, and it costs more when you do. A named day means the truck leaves whether the trailer is full or not, so less of the run gets shared and there is less saving to pass back to you. If the day is fixed by a lease or a closing, say so on the form and we will price it as a fixed date rather than sell you a window you cannot use.

When is consolidated shipping the wrong call?

When the date matters more than the money. If you have to be in the new place on a named day, if you cannot live without the shipment for the length of a window, or if the load is small enough that a dedicated small load service is simpler to schedule, a shared trailer is the wrong tool for you. We would rather say that up front than hand you a window you were never going to be able to work with.
