How we rank movers
8 Top Movers exists to make one decision easier: which long-distance mover fits the move you are actually making. We apply the same criteria to every company we list, in the same order, so the comparison stays consistent. What comes out is our ordering and our read on who each company suits. It is editorial judgment, not a measured rating, and we do not publish per-company scores or review counts.

What we weigh, in this order
Four criteria, applied to every company we list. They are not equal, and the emphasis below is the ordering we use rather than a calculated weight.

Price transparency
We weigh how clearly a company communicates pricing, whether estimates are provided in writing, and how consistently the final invoice matches the quote. Companies that lean on vague phone quotes or add undisclosed fees rank lower.

Claims and protection
We look at the valuation coverage offered, how straightforward the claims process is, and how fairly damage is resolved. Clear valuation options and a documented claims path rank highest.

Delivery reliability
We assess on-time pickup and delivery against the promised window, communication during transit, and how the company handles delays when they happen.

Customer experience
We factor in the quality of coordination, responsiveness before and during the move, and the level of post-move support.
Scope
What the ranking is, and what it is not
The second half matters more than the first. Comparison sites usually leave it out.
What it is
- Our ordering of the companies we list, published in one place and in one order.
- The same four criteria applied to every company, in the same sequence.
- A plain-language read on the kind of move each company suits best.
- An advertising-supported comparison. Pay buys a listing, not a higher number.
What it is not
- A measured rating. There is no score behind the order, so we do not print one.
- A star rating or a review count. We do not publish either, because we do not collect them.
- A purchased rank. Advertisers cannot buy a higher number.
- A verification of a company licensing, insurance or safety record. Check those yourself before you book.
- A guarantee of price, availability or a delivery date. Only a written estimate from the company sets those.

They are our opinion, not a measured rating, and we do not publish per-company scores or review counts. Moving companies pay us to compete for your business — for a listing on the compare desk, and they may pay more for greater prominence there. You never pay us, and using this desk does not increase the quote. Our editorial ranking is a separate page and is not for sale. Requesting a quote is a moving-concierge service: we share only moving criteria (route, size, date) with those companies. They send pricing to us. They never receive your name, phone, or email. You choose which mover to go with, based on the estimates. It is never a booking and carries no obligation.

Definitions
The words the first two criteria turn on
Price transparency and protection are judged against language that is defined federally rather than by any individual mover. These are the definitions we hold companies to, and the ones worth asking about before you sign anything.
The three estimate types
- Binding
- Fixes the price for the inventory listed on it, so it only moves if the inventory does.
- Non-binding
- Can change once the shipment is weighed.
- Binding not-to-exceed
- You pay the lower of the estimate and the actual cost.
The two valuation levels
- Released value protection
- Included at no extra charge. It pays 60 cents per pound per article, so a settlement follows weight rather than what the item was worth.
- Full value protection
- Costs extra. It covers repair, replacement or a cash settlement, and it is the default on an interstate move unless you waive it in writing.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, tell us
Corrections, editorial questions and requests to review a placement all go to the same address. If a company we list changes something material to one of the four criteria, that is exactly the kind of thing we want to hear about.
